Orange County Learning Assistance Sharing Event

Orange, CA–On Friday, October 20, 2017, twelve educators representing five colleges (Coastline Community College, Golden West College, Santiago Canyon College, Saddleback College, and Cypress College) convened at Santiago Canyon College for a morning of discussion related to learning assistance (e.g., tutoring, supplemental instruction, etc.). Among the topics included the role of learning assistance in Guided Pathways. Some takeaways from the meeting include:

  • Learning Assistance is a primary support for students who are on any Pathway
  • More specifically, embedded tutoring can help support success in gateway and other critical courses
  • As well, tutors are poised to work with students who are identified through Early Alert
  • Tutors are invaluable as part of any first-year programming for students
  • Learning assistance professionals should be at the table to discuss Guided Pathways throughout planning and implementation
  • In order to align to Accreditation standards related to learning support (II.B.1-4), it is important to stabilize learning assistance programs and services at our institutions

At the meeting, there was also discussion about the upcoming Southern California Tutor Expo ’18, which will take place on April 13 and 14 at Santiago Canyon College. All tutors, coordinators, and others connected to learning assistance are welcomed to attend this free conference. For more information on this or any 3CSN LAP event, please contact Danny@3csn.org.
